From Your Journal to Grandma's Fridge: Why Real Mail Still Matters

In a world where every photo lives in the cloud, there's something about a physical postcard that lands differently. Early Days lets you turn a journal entry into real mail in under a minute.

Grandma doesn't have a smartphone. Or she does, but she doesn't really know how to use the photo sharing app you set up for her. Or she uses it faithfully but the photos just scroll by in a feed and nothing quite sticks.

A postcard sticks. It goes on the fridge. It goes on the cork board above the desk. It gets shown to visitors who come for dinner. It's still there, with a thumbtack through the corner, when you come to visit two years later.

This is why we built postcards into Early Days — and why we think physical mail is one of the best features in a digital product.

The Problem with Digital Photo Sharing

Digital photo sharing has solved a real problem. When your baby does something wonderful, you can get a photo to your parents and in-laws within minutes, regardless of where anyone lives. That's genuinely valuable, and we're not arguing against it.

But there's a friction problem nobody talks about. Photos in a feed are easy to share and easy to forget. They scroll. They stack up. They compete with everything else in the feed. The moment of delight when a grandparent sees their grandchild in a cute hat is real, but it lasts about fifteen seconds and then the feed moves on.

A physical postcard creates a different kind of moment. It arrives in the mail — which is already something, because most mail is bills and catalogs. It gets held. It gets turned over. It gets placed somewhere deliberate. It becomes a physical object in a person's world rather than a pixel in a feed.

How Postcards Work in Early Days

Sending a postcard takes about a minute.

From any journal entry with a photo, tap "Send as Postcard." Choose a saved address (or add a new one). Write a short message — or use the entry text you already wrote. Preview the front and back. Tap send.

We handle everything else. Early Days routes the order through a professional printing and mailing service. A real 4×6 postcard — printed on quality card stock, with your photo on the front and your message on the back — ships to the address you specified. Delivery typically takes five to seven business days in the US.

Postcard credits can be purchased individually or in packs. Premium subscribers get credits included. Each credit sends one postcard anywhere in the US.

Who's Actually Getting These Postcards

We've thought a lot about who the recipient of a postcard really is. The obvious answer is grandparents — and yes, grandparents love postcards. But there are other uses we didn't anticipate:

  • Sending to yourself. Some parents order postcards and store them as physical keepsakes. There's something about holding a physical 4×6 card with your baby's face on it that a digital photo doesn't replicate.
  • Sending to friends who are far away. New parents often feel socially isolated. A postcard to a good friend who lives across the country is a way of saying "we're here, we haven't forgotten you, look how much has changed."
  • Sending to caregivers. A thank-you postcard to a doula, a nanny, a night nurse — someone who was there in the early weeks — is a meaningful gesture that doesn't require knowing their email address.
  • Building a collection. Some parents send monthly postcards to the same address and ask the recipient to save them. After a year, you have twelve postcards that document the first year of your baby's life in tangible form.

Why Physical Mail Endures

We're not romantics about analog vs. digital. We built a digital product because digital tools are powerful and useful. But we believe that physical objects occupy a different category in human experience.

A digital photo of your baby is information. A physical postcard of your baby is an object. Objects have weight, texture, permanence. They can be lost or damaged, which means they can also be cared for. They can be found in a drawer twenty years later. They can be held by the child they depict, now grown, who can't quite believe they were ever that small.

We built postcards into Early Days because we think the early years deserve to leave a physical trace in the world — not just a digital archive. The journal captures the story. The postcard sends it somewhere it will last.
